Community School of Music and Arts, Mountain View, CA

Architect: Mark Cavagnero Associates, San Francisco, CA

This 25,000 square foot building serves as the first permanent home for the 35-year-old Community School of Music and Arts. Creating a superior acoustical environment for the 204-seat recital hall was one of the school's top concerns.

Acoustical challenges in the recital hall included sound isolation and reverberation control. Sound-absorbing and diffusing panels were installed on the walls, and a sloped ceiling was designed to direct sound to the back of the hall. Low velocity air-ducts in the ceiling maintain a quiet ambient environment.

Salter also provided room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise reduction recommendations for the 20 practice rooms, choral room, dance studio, and visual art space. Exterior sound isolation was required because Caltrain Peninsula rail line is less than 800 feet away.
