San Jose Repertory Theater, San Jose, CA

Architect: Holt Hinshaw, San Francisco, CA

Charles M. Salter Associates provided acoustical consulting for the new "Magic Box Theatre," San Jose's only professional regional theater. The project scope for the 52,000 square foot building included the theater, rehearsal hall, and ancillary spaces. The theater features flexible seating for up to 595 people. The farthest seat is only 54 feet from the stage, an arrangement that enhances the intimacy of the performance. Acoustical design focused on the challenges of the urban site. The theater is near the Mineta San Jose International Airport and is beneath the approach path of approaching airplanes. Additionally, noisy mechanical equipment was forced to be located in an attic space adjacent to the stage house.
