Port of Redwood City Thermal Oxidizer Noise Study, Redwood City, CA

Client: Port of Redwood City, Redwood City, CA

The Port of Redwood City conducted a clean-up operation for an existing petroleum tank farm located on the Port property. As part of the environmental clean-up operation, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were separated from sludge in the tanks. A thermal oxidizer then incinerated the gaseous VOCs (see photo). Our measurements showed that businesses in the adjacent offices were affected by intense low-frequency noise from the combustion process. After considering several remedial options, the Port elected to relocate the thermal oxidizer.
